The Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is a species of the Pheasant Family (Phasianidae) and the order of the Galliformes (Galliformes). It is also the largest chicken bird in Europe. It inhabits coniferous, mixed and deciduous forest zones from Scotland through northern Europe to the eastern part of central Siberia. In Europe, it inhabits boreal and temperate zones above 1000 meters above sea level. Only very occasionally it occurs in lower locations such as in Poland and the Lower Lusatia.
It is very shy and places great demands on its environment. In Central Europe it is only rarely and only in old, untouched mountain forest regions to be found, z. In Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, in the southern Berchtesgadener Land, in the Black Forest, in the Bavarian Forest, and in the Fichtelgebirge. As it has a very low dispersal potential, small populations are rapidly isolated.
